About Me

Hi there! I’m Beth. I’ve lived in Jacksonville since 1997 but have loved this city my whole life. I grew up about an hour outside of town, in Lawtey, on 20 acres of fresh air and pine trees.

Growing up, I was always drawn to city life. In the early 2000s, I began to discover Downtown Jacksonville. Of course, I was already familiar with parts of town, as some of my family called Jax home for many years. But, as an adult, I began to really understand the draw of living in town and spending time Downtown.

This blog is my way of showing appreciation for what makes Downtown Jacksonville a wonderful, vibrant neighborhood, and I hope it will inspire others to visit and see the beauty that sits on the narrow banks of the St. Johns River.

So, why Bold New City 5.0? The city on the river has had five iterations as I see it: Cowford, Jacksonville, recovery from the Great Fire of 1901, Consolidation and post-Super Bowl. “Bold New City of the South” was the tagline adopted at Consolidation, and it’s my favorite nickname. I see Jacksonville once again ready to take a bold step forward into the 21st century to regain its place as a leader in the state and region.

Your blog reminds me of the running comments made by Jodie Foster in the film,
“The Brave One” as she walks around NYC recording city sounds and personal comments for her radio show.
You’re right there is a certain romance to observing all the possibilities and
    adventures in city life.

Love the blog, Beth! I’m a great lover of downtown too!

  3. Beth, I have yet to really dig into your blog, but at this point I want to say that your b-cards (blog cards? 😉 are awesome. I saw them in Chamblin’s Uptown and nabbed one just because it looked cool and really stood out amidst all the flashy cards.

They work, too. Here I am. 🙂

I’ll be reading your stuff from time to time. Kudos for highlighting Jax’s Gems. We definitely have some that deserve the showcase.

Glad I found you. Moving to Jax from Richmond, VA, place of many things unique, historical, and locally owned. I look forward to digging in (and asking you questions) in the coming months. (Had Melbourne/Miami detour; hoping Jax is a good fit). Great job!

Hi, Kristine! Please feel free to ask questions; I love talking about the wonderful gems of Downtown and Jacksonville. By the way, I spent two years in Melbourne, working at the newspaper there.
